Starting Dance School: 3 Things Every Family Should Know

Hi friends! I’m Ariel, owner and creative director of All About Movement Dance Company. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of working with young dancers as a choreographer, mentor, and children’s book author (Gabby's Big Leap). But today, I’m speaking as someone who wants parents to feel confident as their child begins this exciting new chapter in dance.

Here are three things every family should know:

1. Expect First-Day Nerves

The first day is full of emotions, excitement, curiosity, and sometimes jitters. Trust the teacher, give your child space to explore, and remember that day one is just the beginning of their journey.

2. Learn Your Dance Studio Etiquette (Every Studio Is Not The Same)

Every studio has its own rhythm. Being on time, following dress code (they might require a specific leotard, tights, shoes, and etc) follow what they provide. It makes you look like a team player and that you're looking to stay around. Also learning the dancers names in your child or children's class. Never use nicknames unless you are given permission to. Some family members can find this as a bit much. Trust me, I've seen it happen.

Most importantly, showing kindness to all teaches discipline and respect, valuable lessons both in and out of the studio.

3. Support at Home Matters

Your encouragement doesn’t stop at the studio door. Whether it’s listening to your child’s stories, practicing at home, or cheering them on, your support builds their confidence and joy.

At the end of the day, dance school is about more than steps; it’s about creativity, growth, and resilience. Thanks for reading.
